Professor Sabrina He for a lecture on Modern Chinese Piano Music

Dear Teachers,
We are delighted to announce that our Association will have the honor of welcoming Professor Sabrina He for a lecture on Modern Chinese Piano Music on Thursday, October 22, 2026, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Joyful Melodies Music School. We warmly invite you to save the date and join us for this special event.
This lecture will explore the development and stylistic evolution of Chinese piano music since the 20th century, with a particular focus on how Chinese composers have blended the country’s rich traditional musical heritage with Western compositional techniques.
Beginning with early Chinese piano works, Professor He will discuss how composers incorporated pentatonic scales, folk melodies, and the distinctive sounds and performance characteristics of traditional Chinese instruments—including the pipa, guzheng, erhu, and suona—into piano compositions, creating a musical language with a uniquely Chinese character.
As Chinese piano music continued to develop throughout the 20th century, composers increasingly incorporated Western techniques such as polyphony, Impressionism, , and variation forms. These influences contributed to the development of a richer and more modern repertoire, often featuring greater technical and interpretive demands for the pianist.
The lecture will also include live performances of important works representing different periods and styles, including Chen Peixun’s Autumn Moon over the Calm Lake, Du Mingxin’s Dance of the Waterweeds, Sun Yiqiang’s Spring Dance, Wang Jianzhong’s Clouds Chasing the Moon and Liuyang River, Li Ruixing’s Little Bamboo Raft, Li Yinghai’s Flute and Drum at Sunset, and Yin Chengzong/Xian Xinghai’s Ode to the Yellow River.
Through these works, participants will gain a deeper understanding of how elements of traditional Chinese music have been reimagined through the piano and how they have contributed to the development of a distinctive modern Chinese piano tradition.
