Ya Liang Chang, D.M.A./NCTM, is a pedagogue, adjudicator, and pianist. Dr. Chang has presented workshops and lecture recitals at both national and international conferences that included various Music Teachers National Association State Conferences, collegiate pedagogy symposiums, Music Teachers’ Association of California (MTAC) Conventions, as well as the International Society for Music Education 31st World Conference. As an avid pedagogue, Dr. Chang has developed a systematic Fundamental Techniques teaching method that encompasses elementary to advanced techniques with emphasis on tension-free playing and musicality. This method has been featured frequently in conferences and teachers’ organizations. Dr. Chang also collaborates with the MTAC Santa Clara branch and offers online pedagogy seminars that include a complete series of this method to help teachers further understand it. https://www.mtacsantaclara.org/pedagogy-seminar/ As a seasoned adjudicator, Dr. Chang has judged at various competitions, including the Music Teachers’ National Association collegiate and pre-college competitions, and the MTAC piano solo and concerto competitions. Her students have won gold medals and top prizes in the Pelican
International Music Competition, the United States Open Music Competition, the California Association Professional Music Teachers (CAPMT) State Honors Competition, the MTAC piano
solo and concerto competitions. and the San Francisco International Piano Competitions. As a solo and collaborative pianist, Dr. Chang has performed in the United States, Italy, Germany, and Taiwan. She was the winner and recipient of the IBLA Grand Prize and International Piano Competition in Italy and the Bayreuth Summer Festival in Germany. Her concert highlights included solo recitals with the IBLA Foundation in Italy and the Steinway & Sons Premier Piano Artist Concert Series; and collaborative recitals at the Music at Ascension Concert Series.
Dr. Chang has taught on the piano faculty at California State University East Bay Department of Music and Northern Kentucky University School of the Arts Music Program where she received distinguished Faculty Special Recognition twice. She presently serves as the President of the MTAC Santa Clara County Branch and presents pedagogy seminars regularly for music teachers’ organizations. Dr. Chang holds D.M.A. and M.M. degrees in Piano Performance from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and the Boston Conservatory.
